FILE TYPE GUIDE
VECTORS
-
AI - ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR
AI is a proprietary vector-based file format by Adobe Systems. It is the standard source file for your logo. These files allow us to preserve all of your design’s detail when preparing screens to print.
-
EPS - ENCAPSULATED POST SCRIPT
Like a PDF, an EPS can be edited with any vector graphics program. These are just as good as AI files, but are becoming less common.
-
PDF - PORTABLE DOCUMENT FORMAT
Another editable vector-based file format. Its universal file format makes it extremely versatile. It’s typically used for printing and easily sharing documents online. These files are occasionally used to transfer non-vector files, so what you think is a vector may not be.
-
SVG - SCALABLE VECTOR GRAPHIC
SVGs are great for websites or apps to keep logos and icons sharp and are infinitely scalable without pixelation. These are less common than the other vector files, but they are equally as good.
RASTER FILES - (PIXEL BASED)
-
JPEG - JOINT PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPERTS GROUP
A popular image format that is commonly used for photographs and web graphics. Its lossy compression allows for smaller file sizes than PNG, but does not support transparent backgrounds. JPEGS are not infinitely scalable so details and precision can and will be lost depending on the size. They are not great for producing screens to print, but we can make them work if necessary.
-
PNG - PORTABLE GRAPHICS NETWORK
Another image file format that is great for web graphics and digital displays. Supporting transparent backgrounds is a key advantage over JPEG, but file sizes are typically larger. These, like JPEGS, are not infinitely scalable and present the same issues when making screens for printing.
